The majority of Canadian farmers take their role in the environment very seriously. Across the country, provincial organizations host environmental farm plan workshops and there are hundreds of local environmental farm clubs dotting the country. Chemical application courses are a must and many groups organize container pick-ups.

Farmers are far from burying their head in the sand when it comes to the dangers and concerns about the chemicals they use on our food. It makes economic sense on many levels: there’s increasing demand from consumers for less use of chemicals in the production of our food. And, the simple matter that these inputs are desperately expensive is enough to par back to the barest minimal amounts.

But as much as consumers seem to be demanding fewer chemicals in their food – is that really the case? Without some pesticides, are consumers willing to purchase fruit that may have tiny nibbles taken out of it by the pest the farmer was trying to control? Or are consumers willing to pay more for more labour-intensive organic foods?

Perhaps it’s a question of self-reflection we should ask ourselves the next time we’re shopping in the produce department at the grocery store.
